Colours/Patterns
TABBY PATTERN
The tabby pattern is formed by markings of the self pattern colour on a background of agouti hairs. The pattern may be ticked, mackerel, spotted or classic. The points’ markings should show good contrast with the ground colour, but may be less contrasting in the dilute colours (Blue, Lilac, Caramel, Cream and Apricot) and may be paler on the legs than on the other points. The colour of the markings on the points and body should match in tone. Tabbies in the dilute colours will be lighter in tone than the equivalent self colour. The markings can take longer to develop in Reds, Creams and Apricots.
The points do not merge with the body colour as they do in non-tabby patterns but the markings on the points should be darker than the markings on the body.
Head Markings: There should be a clearly defined 'M' on the forehead, 'spectacle' markings around the eyes, a ribbon running from the outer edge of the eye and spotted whisker pads. Ears are solid colour but show clear 'thumb marks', which may be less apparent in dilute colours, and mottled in tortie tabbies.
The nose and paw pad leather may be pinkish outlined with colour, or more solid in colour. The nose and paw pad leathers should match in colour tone.
Leg Markings: Clearly defined broken stripes. Solid markings on the back of the hind legs. The leg markings may be paler than the other points.
Tail Markings: Clearly defined broken rings.
Body Markings: The markings will depend upon the nature of the tabby pattern but will appear as a lighter shade of the points’ markings against the agouti ground colour. The markings will lighten down the flanks to the underparts, which will be a paler shade of the ground colour and may show spots. The Tonkinese expression results in a broad band of more solid colour over the top of the head, along the back and into the base of the tail that is more noticeable with maturity. There should be one or more broken, or unbroken, necklets on the neck/upper chest.
Brown Tabby: Breed 74t Warm brown body markings against a beige agouti ground, with toning darker tabby markings on the points. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads brown or pinkish brown.
Blue Tabby: Breed 74at Bluish-grey body markings, which may have warm undertones, against a pale beige agouti ground, with toning darker tabby markings on the points. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads blue/grey or pinkish grey.
Chocolate Tabby: Breed 74bt Any shade of warm chocolate body markings against a warm beige agouti ground, with toning darker tabby markings on the points. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads chocolate or pinkish chocolate.
Lilac Tabby: Breed 74ct Warm lilac body markings against a magnolia agouti ground, with toning darker tabby markings on the points. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads light pinkish grey.
Red Tabby: Breed 74dt Light red body markings against a cool ivory agouti ground, with toning darker tabby markings on the points. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads pink. Note: Freckles may appear on nose leather, eye rims, lips, paw pads and ears and should not be penalised.
Brown Tortie Tabby: Breed 74et Dark brown tabby markings broken and overlaid with varying shades of red. The colours will be slightly darker on the points. Both elements of tortie and tabby must be present but the distribution of colour is immaterial. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads brown and/or pink.

blends the best features of its ancestors into one beautiful, medium-sized cat that is remarkably dense and muscular. Whether appearing in the coat pattern of its Burmese predecessor, with sparkling gold-green eyes, the pointed pattern of its Siamese ancestor, with glittering blue eyes, or the “mink” coat pattern seen in the show ring, with its unique aqua eyes, the Tonkinese is an intelligent, gregarious cat with a sense of humor. These cats are firmly convinced that humans were put on earth to love them; these are the cats that know they belong. They purred their way through seven years and four presentations to the board of directors of The Cat Fanciers’ Association in their pursuit of championship status, achieving their goal in 1984. Although new to modern competition, this is the same breed depicted in "The Cat-Book Poems of Siam" during the Ayudha Period (1358-1767), and imported to England in the early 1800s as “Chocolate Siamese.” In the United States, Tonkinese and Burmese can trace their beginnings back to Wong Mau, a small walnut colored cat imported to California by Dr. Joseph Thompson in 1930.
The colorful personality of the Tonkinese make them ideal companions. They will take possession of your lap and shoulder, and they will supervise your activities. They are warm and loving, highly intelligent, with an incredible memory and senses that are akin to radar. They are strong willed, and their humans are wise to use persistent persuasion in training them. They are naturals at inventing and playing games, using favorite toys to play fetch, and delighting in games of tag with each other. Of course hide ‘n seek is a favorite game, which they play with humans as well as other Tonks. They become your “door greeter” and will happily entertain your guests. They have been described by enthusiastic owners as part puppy (following their owner around the house), part monkey (their “acrobatics” are legend!), and can sound like an elephant running through your house when they choose. In short: they quickly take over and run your house and your life! Their affectionate ways are impossible to ignore, and they quickly endear themselves to family and visitors.
Caring for Tonkinese is as easy as feeding a well-balanced feline diet, clipping their nails weekly (providing a scratching post and insisting they use it is also imperative), using a rubber brush to groom them, and of course the all important visit to the vet for check-ups and inoculations. These are indoor only cats, and a thorough inspection of your home prior to your Tonks’ arrival, to make certain screens and doors are secured, will help insure they remain indoors. “Cat proofing” your home, much as you would for a two-year old human on the loose, is bound to save you frustration. Toys and an interesting cat tree will help keep them occupied when you have other things to do besides playing with your Tonk. Working humans find two Tonks will keep each other company as well as lessen the mischief one bored Tonk can get into.
Tonks wear a rainbow of colors, and no matter which color in whatever coat pattern you may choose, be assured you are joining an enthusiastic fan club of admirers of this breed. You are about to embark on the most joyful experience of your life — enjoy.
Pricing on Tonkinese usually depends on type, applicable markings and bloodlines distinguished by Grand Champion (GC), National or Regional winning parentage (NW or RW) or of Distinguished Merit parentage (DM). The DM title is achieved by the dam (mother) having produced five CFA grand champion/premier (alter) or DM offspring, or sire (father) having produced fifteen CFA grand champion/premier or DM offspring. Usually breeders make kittens available between twelve and sixteen weeks of age. After twelve weeks, kittens have had their basic inoculations and developed the physical and social stability needed for a new environment, showing, or being transported by air. Keeping such a rare treasure indoors, neutering or spaying and providing acceptable surfaces (e.g. scratching posts) for the natural behavior of scratching (CFA disapproves of declawing or tendonectomy surgery) are essential elements for maintaining a healthy, long and joyful life.

GENERAL TYPE STANDARD
The Tonkinese should be of medium build and foreign type. The body should be firm and muscular with the head, body, legs, feet and tail in proportion to give a well-balanced appearance. The coat pattern is unique, neither pointed nor solid. The ears, mask, legs, feet and tail should be darker in tone, shading to a lighter expression of the same colour on the body. The cat should be even-tempered and of good weight for its size. Tonkinese can be late developers, coming to their best around two years old.
HEAD: The top should be gently rounded with good width between the ears, a moderately proportioned wedge with a muzzle that is neither pointed nor square and a definite, but not exaggerated, whisker pinch. In profile there should be a slight nose break leading down to a level bite and chin of medium depth.
EARS: Medium size, slightly taller than wide, pricked forward, with broad base and oval tips. Base equally balanced between side and top of head, with outer line continuing line of wedge.
EYES: Large and expressive, more almond shaped than round and set well apart. The top line of the eye is slanted down towards the nose; the lower line of the eye is rounded.
EYE COLOUR: Any shade of greenish-blue or bluish-green is acceptable. The eye colour in all Tonkinese may vary in intensity depending upon the influence of the light and the mood of the cat. Incomplete development of eye colour may be found in kittens and young cats.
BODY: Medium to long, well balanced, firm, and muscular. Chest slightly rounded, flanks level, back rising gently from shoulders to rump.
LEGS AND FEET: Legs slender and well muscled, the hind legs slightly longer than the front. Feet neat and oval.
TAIL: Tapering tail of medium length, neither thick nor whippy.
COAT: Close lying and short. Fine, soft, silky with a lustrous sheen.
COLOUR: The Tonkinese coat pattern is unique. It is expressed as a subtle merging of toning colour from the darker ears, mask, legs, feet and tail to the lighter body colour, and is quite different to a self or pointed pattern. It is important that the difference between the points and body colour is not sharply defined. The legs and feet may be paler than the other points but should match in tone. The body colour should lighten gradually towards the underparts. The body should be free of tabby markings in non-tabby adults; the colour will pale towards the roots of the hair. Coat pattern in kittens may develop slowly and may show some slight tabby markings, which should not be faulted.
